While Liuzhou is not listed as one of China’s premier tourist spots, it has a lot to offer to its residents and the daily improvement of facilities and recreational areas is a credit to its local government. While neighbouring Guilin is heralded as the tourist spot for China, Liuzhou, its quiet cousin has a similar beauty, surrounded by strange mountains, ringed by the Liu river, and holding beautiful Longtan Park with its lake and mountain scenery. A photographers paradise if ever there was one. A bus trip takes visitors to the Dule Park with its caves. A tour of the caves is a must for visitors, (providing you don’t mind a bit of a climb). Another place of interest within easy distance of Liuzhou is the city of Nanning. While Delter in Liuzhou is situated at a distance from the City Centre, buses going into the city run at about 7 minutes apart and when buses are crowded, waiting for the next one is usually the best option since this one is usually fairly empty. Delter in Liuzhou can reasonably boast of having beautiful apartments, modern and spacious with great shower facilities and beautiful gardens. The frontage reminds one of expensive townhouses in western countries. When asked by our Chinese friends to compare Shanghai, Wuhan and Hangzhou to Liuzhou I can honestly tell them that I do believe that Liuzhou has the friendliest people. A smile will change frank curiosity into a friendly communication. Children are encouraged to say ,”Hello” to the foreigner by parents who themselves speak no English. Eating out in Liuzhou is a pleasant experience with numerous restaurants boasting an English menu and servers who do their best to communicate in English. When I first came to Liuzhou I missed Hangzhou and Shanghai but now I can honestly say that I love it here.
Located on the banks of the winding Liu River, Liuzhou is a major industrial and cultural center. This prosperous city of 1.4 million is located in southern China. Like Cincinnati, Liuzhou’s focal point is a "fountain square" in the center of the city. Liuzhou, also known as the "Dragon City," was founded 2,100 years ago. As the ancient gateway to Cathay, it was the end of the Silk Road over which Marco Polo traveled on his way to see the Great Khan.
